Harm Reduction Program for Binge Drinking

A program to reduce the negative consequences of heavy episodic or binge drinking developed at the State University of New York at Stony Brook has sparked interest from over 100 universities, colleges and high schools that want to replicate the program on their campuses.

Called Red Watch Band, the program gives students ways to resist social pressures that might prevent them from seeking help for a binge drinker in need of help. They learn CPR, information about alcohol poisoning and participate in role playing exercises designed to encourage them to call for help.

The program focuses on preventing harm, rather than preaching abstinence, and uses a combination of medical and behavioral training.

Jenny Hwang, associate dean and director for prevention and outreach, said that not many people can argue with the importance of preventing death.
