The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety have long demonstrated that many vehicle models have very poor safety records. 1
Improving such models could save thousands of deaths and injuries annually. And laws requiring auto manufacturers to meet higher safety standards on all vehicles could save thousands more from death and injury.
So why doesn’t Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) push for either voluntary or mandatory safety improvements? It’s such a logical way to help reduce the problem of traffic accidents.
General Motors, DaimlerChrysler, and Mitsubishi Motor Corporation are three of the four “Platinum Corporate Sponsors” of MADD. That’s the honor roll of top financial contributors to the activist group. But that couldn’t have anything to do with it. Surely MADD wouldn’t let its desire to continue receiving multi-million dollar contributions influence its position on safety issues. 2
There must be a good reason for MADD’s strange silence on this logical way to protect innocent victims from death and injury. Of course, it would cost automakers millions of dollars, but the results in saved lives would be well worth it.
Surely we can expect MADD to support such safety improvement..... can’t we?
