The Breathalyzer brand breath tester has been used in New Jersey for a half century or more to estimate blood alcohol concentrtion (BAC). It uses a single measure and relies on the person administering it to do some of the analysis.
The state hopes for judicial approval to use the Alcotest 7110, which uses two independent tests to estimate BAC and leaves less room for human error, according to the company selling it. The results of the two measures must yield similar results for the results to be considered valid.
A decision on the state's request is expected to be made by the New Jersey Supreme Court.
