The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) assert that 17,970 people were killed by drunk or impaired drivers in traffic crashes in 2002. However, The National Motorists Association, getMADD, and Responsibility in DUI Laws charge that the number is grossly inflated in order to mislead the public.
These organizations are so convinced that the statistic is based on distortion rather than reality that they are publicly challenging anyone to prove that the number is accurate. The first person who can prove that the statistic is correct is being offered $20,000.00 by those organizations.
