Total alcohol consumption in North America dropped 9.4% between 1990 and 2001 according to the latest edition of World Drink Trends. The measure used is not the total volume of alcohol beverages consumed, but the quantity of absolute alcohol within all beverages consumed.
Standard drinks of beer, wine and distilled spirits all contain equivalent amounts of pure alcohol, although beer, for example, has much more total volume of liquid. For more, visit Alcohol Equivalence and Standard Drinks.
