Henry Wechsler opposes teaching moderation in the consumption of alcohol to those adults of legal drinking age who choose to drink.
Colby College has instituted a highly successful program permitting students of legal age to consume alcohol in moderation at Friday dinners on campus. The purpose is to teach and promote moderation in alcohol consumption, which research demonstrates is much more successful than promoting abstinence and the prohibition of alcohol for legal age adults.
However, vocal anti-alcohol activist Henry Wechsler thinks colleges should promote abstinence rather than moderation for adults. Unfortunately, the unsupervised drinking that occurs at fraternity houses, off-campus parties, and similar locations tends to promote excess. The Colby program is designed to demonstrate that alcoholic beverages are best savored in moderation, which enhances the drinking experience.
