Cancer patients will be served free spirits, wine and beer in their hospital beds after medical personnel decided that the health benefits of alcohol have been overlooked for too long.
Free gin, sherry, wine, and beer will be offered to patients at least twice a day in the Wessex Ward of England’s North Hampshire Hospital.
The nurse who oversees the ward says the demonizing of alcohol has been obscuring its obvious health benefits. She says that people forget that it can be beneficial to health and was commonly prescribed by physicians until the 1980s.
Ironically, that’s about the time that scientific medical research began widely identifying the many benefits of beer, wine and distilled spirits to improved health and greater longevity. People who drink alcoholic beverages in moderation tend to enjoy better health and live longer than those who either abstain or abuse alcohol.
