“Bystander” Intervention to Reduce College Student Alcohol Abuse

College students themselves may be able to discourage alcohol abuse on campus, says Karin Walton of the North Dakota Higher Education Consortium for Substance Abuse Prevention.

Students get training on how to react if they see friends drinking too much. Walton says if students express concern about the effects on their friends from drinking too much, it may reduce the problem. For example, she says students who drink too much can be told they're interrupting the study of students who aren’t drinking.
