Aerobic Exercise May Help Protect Brains of Heavy Drinkers

Regular aerobic exercise may help preven or even possibly reverse some of the brain damage than can be associated with prolonged heavy or abusive consumption of alcohol.

According to the study, published in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, regular aerobic exercise may reduce damage to the “white matter” of the brain. This, along with grey matter, are the main components of the brain.

By using a special form of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) called Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI), researchers were able to examine the white matter in relation to the level of aerobic exercise among heavy drinkers.

Of course, heavy drinking carries numerous health and safety dangers and is never safe. It is only moderate consumption that is associated with health and longevity benefits.
