Drinking Alcohol and Risk of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma

A meta-analysis of 29 studies that included 18,759 non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) cases investigated the relationship between alcohol consumption and the disease.

The overall risk of developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma was 15% lower for drinkers compared to non-drinkers or abstainers. Light drinkers (consuming less than one drink per day) had a 12% lower risk, moderate drinkers (consuming one up to but not including four drinks per day) experience a 13% lower risk, and heavy drinkers (consuming four or more drinks per day) enjoyed a 16% lower risk of developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The positive effect of drinking on lowering the risk of the disease was similar for both men and women.
