Many organizations published temperance magazines or journals. This listing includes most of those. However, it does not include annual reports, minutes, proceedings, or yearbooks.
Overview of Temperance Magazines
I. Geographic List
II. Alphabetical List
III. Resources
After each temperance magazine is when available, the place of publication, the sponsoring organization, and the dates of publication. Clicking on the title leads to its entry on Worldcat. (That’s short for the “world catalogue.”) Libraries that hold the item are listed. You can then use your local library’s interlibrary loan service to borrow a copy of the temperance magazine of interest.
In section I (Geographical List), look for temperance magazines by country, state, or province of publication. Section II (Alphabetical List) is self-explanatory. In both sections, alphabetising ignores the articles “the” and “a” in titles.
A Look Back: Temperance Magazines
Temperance magazines reflect the time in which they are published. For example, the early temperance movement generally tried to convince people to abstain. It tended to use moral arguments. Thus, early temperance magazines reflect that view.
Often, the focus was on distilled spirits. (That’s whiskey, gin, vodka, rum, etc.) Many in the movement only opposed drinking spirits. This reflected a common myth that continues even today. It’s that spirits are more alcoholic than beer and wine.
However, standard drinks of beer, wine, and spirits have the same amount of pure alcohol. Specifically, it’s six-tenths of one ounce. They’re all the same to a breathalyzer.
- Regular 12 ounce can or bottle of beer.
- Fine ounce glass of dinner wine.
- Shot (1.5 ounce) of spirits.
With the passage of time, the temperance movement began calling for complete abstention from all alcohol. And it called for government to impose alcohol prohibition on the entire population. Thus temperance magazines began calling for National Prohibition.

Success
The success of the temperance movement was due to two major factors. One was powerful and growing women’s movement. An example of this directed toward temperance was the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU).
The other was a growing hostility toward drinking by major Protestant churches. Rather than objecting to the abuse of alcohol, they came to oppose all drinking. However, calling drinking a sin caused a serious problem. That’s because the Bible says that Jesus both made and drank wine.
Their solution was ingenious. It was the two-wine theory. Thus, whenever Jesus drank wine or said good things about it, the liquid was really only grape juice. Whenever he criticized it, it was wine.
Of course, temperance propaganda was highly important. There were temperance plays, songs, books, pamphlets and, in later years, movies. And temperance magazines were an important part of the effort.
Temperance Today
Temperance activists have returned more recently in a new guise. Sometimes called neo-temperance or neo-prohibitionist, the new temperance movement is active and growing.
However, not even National Prohibition did that. It prohibited the production, transportation, and sale of beverage alcohol. But it didn’t prohibit its purchase or consumption. Therefore, many people stockpiled alcohol before Prohibition. Many others legally made their own. In addition, alcohol could legall be sold for medical, religious, and certain other purposes.
