Women for Sobriety’s New Life Program uses 13 statements that support emotional growth. To practice the program, members get up 15 minutes earlier than usual to review the thirteen affirmations. They then select one to use consciously throughout the day. In the evening, they review their use of the affirmation and its effects. Both on themselves and their actions that day.

Affirmations

    • I have a life-threatening problem that once had me. Now I take charge of my life and my disease. I accept the responsibility.
    • Negative thoughts destroy only myself. My first conscious sober act must be to remove negativity from my life.
    • Happiness is a habit I will develop. I create happiness rather than waiting for it.
    • Problems bother me only to the degree I permit them to. I now better understand my problems and do not permit problems to overwhelm me.

    • Love can change the course of my world. Caring becomes all important.
    • The fundamental object of life is emotional and spiritual growth. Daily I put my life into a proper order, knowing which are the priorities.

Teachings

Women for Sobriety alcoholism self-help teaches self-enhancing and sober behaviors. It rejects using fear, requiring submission, and imposing peer criticism.

WFS Certified Moderators lead the meetings. They occur at least once a week and are not longer than one and one-half hours. The moderator opens meetings and reads the Thirteen Statements and Mission Statement. Each woman then introduces herself by saying “My name is _______ and I am a competent woman. This week I ______” (and says something positive). Discussion follows, based on the Moderator’s Manual.

Meetings end with women joining hands and making an affirmation. “We are capable and competent, caring and compassionate, always willing to help another, bonded together in overcoming our addictions.”

Members also subscribe to Sobering Thoughts. It’s the Women for Sobriety free newsletter that’s emailed. They can also enjoy the benefits of the chat room group meetings and message boards.
